1926 Dean V.I. Moore elected as first president

1926 First annual conference is held

1935 First recorded state meeting is held in Dallas

1935 First executive committee is formed

1945 TADAM has 32 members

1949 TADAM has 50 members

1950s

1950s-60s Conferences include “bull sessions” and “question boxes”

1951 Name changes to Texas Association of Student Personnel Administrators (TASPA)

1951 TASPA dues are $1 per year

1951 Total conference cost is $84.70 for 32 attendees in Houston

1952 First women presenters at the conference

1952 TASPA Tattle newsletter is established

1952 First appearance of the title “Vice-President” among members

1953 First official job placement service begins with announcements in the Tattle

1956 Conference addresses minority student issues for the first time

Late 50s Conference sessions focus on hazing and alcohol abuse for the first time

1960s

1960 First woman keynote speaker at the conference: Dr. Bernice Moore

1960 First woman attends TASPA conference as a participant: Ruby Cox of San Angelo College

1960 Brainstorming session at conference identifies concerns about quiet dorms, suitcase colleges, parking, integration, research in the field, women in TASPA, and non-traditional students

1961 Conference theme is used for the first time, “Emphasizing the Academics”

1961 First conference opening banquet is held for the first time

1963 Conference program is professionally printed rather than mimeographed

1963 First conference chair is appointed

1964 TASPA endorses a research project for the first time

1960s

1964 TASPA membership votes to allow African Americans as members

1964 TASPA invites junior college representatives to join

1964 TASPA establishes institutional memberships

1965 First women members join: Doris Ayers and Jesse Jai McNeil

1965 Conference addresses legal topics for the first time

1966 TASPA constitution changed to delete the male-only membership clause

1966 First mention of illicit drug use on campus in the TASPA Tattle

1968 TASPA establishes a conference registration fee of $10 plus the cost of meals

1969 Every conference session addressed the theme of confrontation

1970s

1970 First women officers elected: Ruth Crary, second vice president, and Margaret Berry, third vice president

1971 TACUSPA appoints a legislative monitor to keep the membership informed of issues

1971 TASPA prints and distributes its first membership directory

1972 Conference sessions focus on cultural revolution, living-learning programs, and minorities

1974 Began co-sponsoring a legal conference with the University of Texas School of Law

1974 Name changes to Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators (TACUSPA)

1975 Conference is dedicated to the topic of accountability and management by objectives

1978 TACUSPA establishes Distinguished Service Award

1979 TACUSPA institutes a graduate student scholarship program for conference attendance

1980s

1980 TACUSPA initiates a professional development grant program

1980 TACUSPA designs first membership card

1980 TACUSPA membership votes to endorse and support several legislative resolutions

1981 TACUSPA establishes Dissertation of the Year Award

1983 Minority Affairs Commission is established

1985 Research and Graduate Education (RAGE) Commission is established

1986 RAGE establishes guidelines for sponsored research and launches a research development grant

1987 Two former TACUSPA presidents launched the Council of Student Services Vice Presidents group

1987 TACUSPA Multicultural Commission co-sponsors a drive-in conference on multicultural issues at the University of North Texas

1990s-Today

1991 First African American president is elected: William Gregory Sawyer

1996 TACUSPA website established

1997 TACUSPA is granted 501C(3) status

1999 First Hispanic president is elected: Eliot Chenaux

2000 TACUSPA celebrates 75th anniversary

2001 Graduate student case study competition established

2002 Membership directory is distributed in CD-Rom format

2002 Partnership established with the Texas Higher Education Law Conference

2003 Held joint summer conference with Texas & Oklahoma Campus Compacts

2003 Outstanding New Professional and Mid-Level Professional of the Year Awards established.

2005 Held joint summer conference with NASPA Region III

2005 TACUSPA celebrates 80th anniversary
